Joana Hurtado
Writer, curator and researcher
Joana Hurtado Matheu is a writer, curator, and researcher specialised in the relationship between artistic practices, photography, and cinema. She is currently the artistic director of Mayoral Gallery and since 2022 has also been working as a Professor of Theory for the Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Design at Escola Massana of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. From 2019 to 2023, she was the director of Fabra i Coats, the Contemporary Arts Centre of Barcelona, and from 2010 to 2019 she headed the Can Felipa Visual Arts programme set up by the Barcelona Town Council. She is an art historian with a degree from the University of Barcelona and holds a Master in Art Criticism and Communication from the University of Girona. In addition, she also has a post-graduate degree in Cinematographic and Audiovisual Research from Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3 University. She has curated exhibitions and cinematographic programmes; published art books; and written for catalogues, collective works, and specialised and divulgation magazines such as the supplement “Cultura/s” in La Vanguardia, with which she collaborated regularly from 2003 to 2014.
